About me
Facts don’t change people’s minds, emotions do. Stories change people’s lives. They ignite social movements and motivate transformation, for good or for ill. I never thought I’d end up as a “Storytelling Guy,” but as an unabashed activist, a creative artist, and a recovering academic – it all makes sense. Initially, I cared about the issues, the people, and the environment; so I focused on human rights, social justice, and sustainability. I wanted other people to care, assuming, “If people only knew. . . they would care.” But Really, I had it backwards. The reality is that some of the most amazing people building the most impactful products, services, or innovative solutions were, often, horrible at communicating their story. So, I partnered with them to accelerate their impact. It started with just video production, but quickly evolved into coaching and facilitation on Content Strategy, Mission, Vision, Values, Identity, Theory of Change, etc.— all with the purpose of transforming these missions into movements through the power of storytelling. I started my career researching social movements, intervention methodology, and systems of oppression, it was a natural next step to apply those years of research into what is now Cage Free Productions: a storytelling agency building the Vision of the Movement, rooted in Human-Centered Production™ Our storytelling services contributed to: → $90M+ Donations/Grants → $15M+ Revenue → $1M+ Increase in Event Sponsorships → 12M+ Impressions/Views In short, every mission needs a movement, every movement needs a story, and every story needs a strategy. Though I didn’t set out to be the “Storytelling Guy,” given the nature of the work, I was privileged to experience the world in such an accelerated fashion: → 25 years of Social Movement Activation: Social Impact Filmmaking, Strategic Communications, & Organizational Storytelling → 35+ Countries (some multiple times) → 10 War/Revolution/Post-conflict zones → ~2,000 Interviews → 100’s of Initiatives (Domestic & International) → 1000’s of Lives Transformed → Countless Memories → A couple dozen seriously sketchy situations (that I will forever carry with me) That's my story and my purpose.
